Some printers offer the option to scan a file to a shared folder on a windows or mac computer. In some cases like in Windows 10 1703 (Fall Creators Update) the option to scan to folder is not working like it should .
On windows xp, 7, 8 or 10 you need to share a folder and give rights to the user that uses the computer and on the printer you need to set up the path .
On Canon IR printers :
Name : whatever
Protocol : SMB
Host Name : computer name
Folder Path : scan or whatever
User Name : user connected to computer
Password : password
If the SMB port in enabled on your computer this shoul be enough, if you are using Windows 10 1703 for example you could be into trouble .
